The Weekend Warrior Mindset

Bill, Summer and I live in a suburb outside of St Louis, MO. Bill and I both work full-time jobs and have been with the same company for many years. Summer also attends our local Catholic school. I just wanted to share a little about my family and how we make camping weekends work for us.

Sure, many of us would like to be full-timers in our RVs but life expectations and responsibilities make us weekend warriors. While some of us like our daily life and only want to enjoy camping on our off times.

Because of our daily life obligations, we make the most of our camping season. We always try to plan one or two big trips during the summer and we spend most of the other weekends camping.

So don’t think you have to travel full time or camp the entire summer in order to be an RVer. The RV world has room for all types of campers. We’ve learned that the key to camping more often is making weekend trips feel like a full experience and not just a rushed pack and go.

Here are a few tips that help us enjoy quick trips without the stress:

● Pre-pack essentials: We keep our camper stocked with basics like toiletries, cooking supplies, and non-perishable snacks so packing is fast.
● Simplify your meals: Think quesadillas, hot dogs or foil-pack meals, as easy foods = more time around the campfire.
● Arrive early (or late): If possible, leave Friday right after work or school, or early Saturday morning. Every extra hour counts.
● Have a go-to campground list: Keep a few favorites bookmarked that are easy to book and familiar, it cuts planning time in half!

Midweek Mini Getaways

If you work remotely, have a flexible schedule, or a little unused PTO, midweek camping can be a total game changer. We’ve taken advantage of remote work days by:
● Logging in from our camper when Wi-Fi allows (some campgrounds now cater to remote workers).
● Adding a night or two onto a weekend trip for a quieter Monday or Thursday.
● Planning around school holidays or teacher workdays to sneak in an extra camping day. Midweek trips are often less crowded, easier to book, and incredibly peaceful. Creative scheduling has so many benefits.

Close to Home Campgrounds = More Time Outdoors

You don’t have to go far to feel “away.” Some of our favorite trips have been within 1–2 hours of home.
Here’s why close-to-home destinations work so well:
● Less time driving, more time camping
● Easier to handle last-minute weather or schedule changes
● Great for testing new camping gear or introducing kids to camping
● No need to take a full day off work or school

Pro tip: Create a list of campgrounds, state parks, or RV resorts within 90 minutes of your home. Bookmark them and rotate through the season!

Camping doesn’t always have to be a big, once a year vacation. With a weekend warrior mindset, a little planning, and a willingness to think small-scale, you can squeeze so much adventure into even the busiest season. We’re proof that even a 2-night trip can feel like a full reset.

Tasha and Bill have been travelling since they got married. In 2022 they purchased their Starcraft Autumn Ridge 26BH and have not looked back. Before owning an RV, life felt much more tied to routine. Most of their adventures were limited to day trips or quick vacations that always felt rushed. Owning an RV completely changed that for them. It gave them the freedom to turn those dreams into reality, to slow down, and to embrace the adventure of life on the road. Now, every trip feels like an opportunity to create lasting memories and explore the world together as a family. It’s been a total lifestyle transformation!
